Good Friday & Easter Activity! ❤️

Hi, there! I’m sending this email early this week to share a wonderful Easter Activity you can do Friday. It’s from Courtney DeFeo’s book, “In this House We Will Giggle”:

1. Tie two sticks together to make a cross.
2. On Good Friday, you and your kiddos write down some of your sins- ways you have not loved God or others. Tape them on the cross (we taped them backwards to keep it between each of us & God).
3. Easter morning before your kids are awake, throw the papers away so they only see the cross.
4. This is a great visual to explain to our kids that when we believe in Jesus, we are forgiven of ALL our sins and can be with him forever. Jesus took our sins upon himself when he died on the cross. But the good news is that he rose three days later, giving us life now and forever with him! ❤️
Thank you, Lord! Happy Easter to each of you.

Jesus knew what awaited Him.

But He still rode into Jerusalem.

Jesus rode on, with crowds before and behind Him, shouting, “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord.”

Jesus knew what awaited, yet he persevered.

Because of His love for us – His eyes set on things above.

Jesus knew the pain he would endure, yet, he rode on.

Even through the darkness, He rode on.

Jesus saw hope.

He knew the joy set before Him – the gift of Eternal Life that would come to all who call on Him through giving His life and rising that third day, so he rode on.

Lord,
as we are in this place of waiting,
help us remember how Jesus waited.
How in darkness, uncertainty, and anguish,
Jesus turned his heart to you.
He set his eyes on you.
He set his mind on you.
And, He kept going. Lord, help us do that also.
Thank you, Jesus, for persevering, and that we can have life now and forever with You because of it.

In Jesus’ Name, amen.

What a story to share with our children – when Jesus was in anguish, he prayed. And, he kept going because he “knew the joy set before Him.”

Week 2 Fun & Creative Activities, A Silver Lining, & You Are Not Alone

Week 2 Activities

{Receive these posts once a week via email, by subscribing to my Blog in the right sidebar or below. }

Activity #1: Outdoor Scavenger Hunt. Have your children draw or write about 10 items  to look for – write each one on a different notecards. Have your kids exchange notecards. Then, go on a walk and look for those items.

Activity #2: Homemade Play Dough. It is so much softer than regular play dough and keeps for about 3-6 months in a ziplock bag or other sealed container. I doubled the recipe to have more. I also laid a towel down on the table for easy clean-up. I got this activity from the great book, 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids.

1 cup flour, 2 teaspoons of Cream of tartar, 1/3 cup salt, liquid water colors or food coloring, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil.

  1. In a bowl, combine 1 cup flour, 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, and 1/3 cup salt.
  2. Then, add the water and oil. Mix well with a whisk until there are no lumps.
  3. Add food coloring or liquid watercolors in and stir. It’s fun for the kids to watch the colors mix.
  4. Pour the mixture into a pan and heat on low medium heat on your stove. *It’s pretty tricky to stir for the kids, so the adult should stir it.
  5. Stir it often. It should take a few minutes to start coming together and will no longer stick to the pan. Then it is ready.
  6. Put the playdough out on the counter to cool.

IMG_8826Activity #3. Create Your Dreamhouse. Write about what your dreamhouse would look like
– slides instead of stairs, upside-down house, etc.? After they write it, have them create a model of it with boxes, paper towel tubes, tinfoil, straws, etc., create it with play dough, or draw it.

Activity #4 “Tennis”. If you have tennis rackets and some balls, play tennis in the driveway if you have one. We have spent hours and hours doing this each week. We score like tennis, but it’s more like ping pong since the “court” is small. Draw boundaries with chalk.

*As a side-note, I do not think we have to constantly entertain our kids. I think it’s great for them to entertain themselves. These activities are just simple ways to open up their imaginations and creativity and offer fun ways to connect with each other. Enjoy!*

Also, Spring Break is next week so I won’t be sharing weekly activities next week- just content. Enjoy your week!

Our kids turned 9-years-old April 1st! The silver lining was the many friends and family who sent videos celebrating them. I was amazed at all the people coming together to show their love for our kiddos, B,  B, & G.

This is such a tough time, but in the midst of the hard, let’s celebrate those silver lining moments. What is one of your silver lining moments?

91620158_1135876960085251_3665636647334051840_oMy 9-year-old daughter screamed, as tears drenched her eyes, “Why do people and pets have to die! I hate it!”

She had just heard that our neighbor’s dog who she adored died of a brain tumor and has also heard about the coronavirus affecting so many people.

We’ve shared what’s going on in very limited doses with our kids and prayed about it, but we have not talked excessively about it.

Still, later as I made my bed, she innocently said, “My new year’s resolution is going to be that no one dies next year.”

What a bittersweet expression of yearning for all to be well.

It led to a valuable, not drawn-out conversation. I told her that it’s difficult, but life on earth doesn’t last forever. Jesus does.

My daughter found comfort being reminded that when we believe in Jesus, we live forever with Him.

She was able to move forward and started talking and giggling about other things.

It can be a hard thing for our kids to process, but if we keep pointing them back to Jesus, they will have hope.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him so that you will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

Ecclesiastes 3
1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot…
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance…
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.

Look to the Lord (Plus, 5 Screen-Free Activities)

0-3When my dad was younger, he had a rebellious side. Raced cars in the alleys, sat in detention every Saturday at his military school, and well, got into trouble.

He had a line of step-dads, seven of them, and his mom died at 49.

His mom was the “life of the party”. One of his step-dads was the Assistant Director of the Lassie series, but my dad wasn’t star struck by him. He was star-struck by her –because she was his mother.

My dad has an uncanny way of looking at life in contentment and making the most of it.

He could have wallowed. He had every reason to, but he chose to move past it.

You would think he’d follow in his mom’s footsteps and marry time and time again.

But, he chose the beautiful way of commitment – true love. My dad and mom have been married 47 years.

Despite the roller coaster of his childhood, he has been a remarkable husband and dad.

Not perfect, but just the dad I need and just the husband my mom needs. My mother has also been the stronghold he needs.

If your past is marked with pain, you do not have to stay there.

You have a choice to be the person God calls you to be. To choose differently. To pave a different path.

You don’t have to follow the footsteps of the ones who went ahead of you.

You can follow the steps of the One who created you.
The One who formed you.
The One who believes in you.

Look to him and follow the footsteps marked out for you by the One who is perfect.
By the one who loves you.
By the One who calls you by name.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
Before you were born I set you apart.” Jeremiah 1:5

Fun, simple ideas to bring fun to learning beyond the screen! (Add your ideas in comments)

Activity #1: Oobleck: Mix 1 cup water and 1 cup cornstarch (it seems stiff, but when your hands touch it, IMG_8620it loosens up. It’s a lot of fun. You can add an additional teaspoon of water at a time if you want to loosen it up more. We make it together and then start centers. You can add little plastic items to it also to make it more fun.

Activity #2: Treasure Hunt. Talk about directions North, South, East, & West. With painters’ tape, make a cross/compass on the ground and write the directions, N, S, E, W in the appropriate place so they remember.

Tell them they will follow directions to find a treasure. Ask if they believe that there really will be a treasure at the end. Share with them that that is Faith: believing even when you don’t see it. Give your child the treasure to hide (I gave mine a lollipop).

Have them start where you made the painters tape compass. Then, tell them to write down a list of directions to get to the treasure. For example: 5 steps North, 10 steps East, South 3 steps, etc. to get to the treasure. Have them try it out to see if they did it correctly. Then they give the directions to someone else in the family to follow. My kids had so much fun doing this.

Activity #3: Writing Prompt: If you could make your dream house, what would it look like? Slides instead of stairs, upside down house, etc.? Then, have them either draw the house or create it with play dough or boxes, paper towel tubes, egg cartons and other items.

Activity #4: Foam Dough. Mix 1 cup shaving cream & 1 cup cornstarch. You can add a little washable paint for color or food coloring. This is more crumbly than regular play dough, but still fun to play with. You can always use regular play dough if your kids would enjoy that more. I got this activity from the great book, 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids.

Activity #5: Painting Ice. Fill a few different-sized plastic containers with water and IMG_2896
Freeze them overnight. The next day, pour them into different pans. Your kids can paint
on the ice with plastic utensils, paintbrushes, or their hands if they don’t put their hands in their mouths. The design of painting the ice looks so cool, especially mixing and matching different colors. The texture is awesome for the kids to feel. (Previously published on Focus on the Family.)

You can also put little plastic items in the containers with the water, and then freeze them. The next day, put the blocks of ice in the sun and the kids can paint and then chip away at them to free the items from the ice.

I usually have one child do the creative center, while one does school assignments on the computer, and one works on Sunshine Math with me. I don’t always do a creative activity each day in the school week, but I try to. After 20 to 25 minutes, we switch.

Feeling Overwhelmed Homeschooling?, Take Courage!, & Loving Others

89848672_1126219587717655_2958655197569613824_o

Yesterday, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the different homeschooling approaches.

But, after my best friend who has homeschooled for years told me she only does it 3 hours a day, I was relieved (She does the 3 hours straight with two short “brain breaks”. She also recommends “Easy Peasy” Homeschool.)

So, here’s the simpler schedule I created:

8:30 Devotional/Bible during breakfast

9am: Prayer, then Writing prompts/work on writing mechanics too

About 9:45 Brain Break

10:00 Read book aloud to kids while they work on a puzzle, color, or peeler beads.

10:20 We do 3 Centers and switch after about 25 minutes.
#1: I work one-on-one with each child doing a math packet called Sunshine Math- it’s awesome – lots of logic thinking: http://eastonmath.pbworks.com/w/pa…/31191599/Sunshine%20Math.). If you scroll down on their website, there are answers with explanations.

#2: Do computer school assignments (alternate different days doing Social Studies, Science, Math, Reading Comprehension, etc.).

#3: Something sensory: sand, play dough, slime, or something else similar.

12pm Lunch

2pm Chill time (finishes at 2:45 if do well, but if keep getting out of room, etc. ends at 3). I have them gather all they want to use in their room beforehand.

Some afternoons they’ll just play and other ones we’ll do creative things like baking to work on measurement, a science project like creating dioramas, make slime, a Geography or History project, paint, and have LOTS of outdoor time.

This afternoon, they planted some seeds they’ll be taking care of, did chores they had, and played the whole afternoon.

Each night, they also spend twenty minutes to an hour reading.

Once I took a step back and broke it up this way, it was SO much better. Enjoy learning what works for you.

If you have any more tips, please share. We’re all trying to figure this out as we go!

Someone recently wrote how she couldn’t believe churches were “giving in and closing” – how those who go to church right now were “succumbing to the world”.

As Jesus followers, we are called to look beyond our self-interests to the interests of others.

The church is the people of God. It is NOT a building.

Jesus himself said that the “kingdom of God is within us”.

The church exists when we love the Lord & others with all our heart, mind, and soul. And that starts with being wise and protecting the vulnerable.

When we don’t go to church right now, it is because we are following one of Jesus greatest commandments: to love others.

And, let’s remember that Church. Is. Not. Closed.

Church is always open because the Kingdom of God resides in our hearts.

Seek the Lord. Reach out to Him. He’s right here with us.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Jesus (MT 7:7-8)

Prayer, Jesus Had an Inner Circle But…, Uplifting Others

Jesus had an Inner Circle But Talked to All People – We Should Too

That mom I didn’t know said four words to me.

Four words that lifted my spirits: “Way to go, mom.”

As moms, it can be easy to see where we’re falling short, so it was refreshing when this mom overheard me and said, “Way to go, mom. I love that.”

What I did was so simple. You know how our kids can easily lag behind us when we’re walking somewhere? Well, my daughter and I were leaving soccer practice and as she lagged behind me, I said, “Come on, Gracie. I want to walk WITH you. Not in front of you.”

That’s it. But this mama stopped and took two seconds to encourage me.

Take that two seconds to let another mama know what she’s doing well, even if it’s small. Sometimes we just need a little encouragement. ❤️

“Therefore encourage and build one another up, just as you are already doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11
